Our Education building

The original building on our site, serving our Congregation for both worship and other activities, was our Education building.

Constructed in 1966, it was designed by famed architect Richard Neutra, in his well-known style as pictured below. Our building is even featured in one book cataloging examples of Mr. Neutra's designs.

This view of our Education building's West side, shows the clean, simple lines and the generous use of glass typically found in Mr. Neutra's designs.

Its 7000 sq feet (which includes the overhangs) contains three classrooms, offices, restrooms, and a large room with a kitchen area (that we have named 'Fellowship Hall') which serves as both a dining hall and a meeting hall.

A view from the front highlights another Neutra architectural element, that being the bold horizontal overhangs which shade the windows from the intense midday sun.

Significant portions of Hacienda Heights were still open land back then!

Our sanctuary

Our sanctuary was completed in December of 1980, about 14 years after the Education building was completed in November of 1966. The sanctuary was formally dedicated to service on February 1,1981.

Designed and constructed by the August Company (the owners of this construction firm were congregation members) in a modern 'Mission Style', it blends beautifully with our Southern California landscape.

The formal Rose Garden in the courtyard between the sanctuary and the Education Bldg., was designed and created by congregation members in 1990.

Interestingly enough, this was not the Sanctuary originally designed for our site. The famous Neutra firm (Richard and his son Dion), in addition to designing our Education building, also produced a complete master plan for our site, which included a contemporary 'in-the-round-style' sanctuary to be constructed east of the Education building, along Hacienda Boulevard.

Unfortunately, that portion of the site was sold to raise capital to fund construction of the sanctuary, and the remaining area to the West could not accomodate the original design. While the loss of the original design was a disappointment, we have certainly enjoyed our many years of worship in our lovely 'Mission-Style' Sanctuary.
